In subtraction, the first number is called

For example : 5 – 2 = 3 ⇒ 3 is less than 5 (3 < 5) but 3 is greater than

2 (3 >2).

Previously we have seen that in addition on number line that from the given number we go forward, but here we have to do exactly opposite of it. As addition and subtraction are two opposite operations. During subtraction we jump to left side by one step.

• Draw a number line starting from zero.

• Mark the first given number.

• From the mark number go backward (or left side) by the 2nd given digit.

• That gives you the answer of subtraction.

1) 8 – 5

Draw a number line up to say 15.

Mark 8 on it.

As the 2nd number is 5 and we are doing subtraction, so go 5 steps to left side from 8.

So the answer of 8 – 5 is 3.

2) 10 – 8

Draw a number line up to say 15.

Mark 10 on it.

As the 2nd number is 8 and we are doing subtraction, so go 8 steps to left side from 10.

So the answer of 10 – 8 is 2.
